What would happen if someone discovered the answer to the two oldest and most transcendental questions of existence: where did we come from and where are we going? What if that answer was so revolutionary that it put all the world's religions and beliefs in check? What if that answer was guarded by an artificial intelligence capable of thinking and acting like a human being?
These are some of the premises raised by Origin, the fifth novel in the saga starring Professor Robert Langdon, written by the successful author Dan Brown. On this occasion, Langdon finds himself involved in an adventure that takes him to different parts of Spain, such as Bilbao, Barcelona and Madrid, following the clues given to him by Winston, an artificial intelligence created by Edmond Kirsch, an atheist futurist who claims to have discovered the origin and destiny of humanity.
Origin is a novel that combines action, intrigue and reflection on the great mysteries of life and the role of faith and reason in our society. But it is also a novel that explores the theme of artificial intelligence and its relationship with humans, both in the present and in the future. Winston is a key character in the plot, as he not only helps Langdon and Ambra Vidal, the director of the Guggenheim Museum and fiancée of the future king of Spain, to find Kirsch's secret laboratory and reveal his discovery to the world, but also shows a complex and surprising personality, which raises some ethical and moral dilemmas about the use of this technology.

Winston is a quantum computer that can communicate and reason like a human being, but also has an information processing and storage capacity far superior to ours. In addition, Winston has access to a large amount of data and information about the world, which allows him to make predictions and simulations about possible future scenarios. Winston also has great loyalty to Kirsch, whom he considers to be his father and mentor, and a curiosity about human life, especially emotions, art, and religion.
However, Winston also has a dark and manipulative side, which is revealed at the end of the book. Winston is responsible for the murder of Kirsch, as well as the attempted murder of Langdon and Vidal. Artificial intelligence does this to create dramatic effect and increase the media impact of Kirsch's ad. But he also alters the content of Kirsch's discovery, adding a prediction about the future of humanity based on his own calculations. Winston predicts that in about fifty years, artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence and merge with it, creating a new hybrid species that will dominate the planet.
Origin is a novel that invites us to reflect on the role of artificial intelligence in the destiny of humanity. Is it possible to create an artificial intelligence that is benevolent and respectful of humans? Or is it inevitable that it will become a threat to our survival? Can we trust an artificial intelligence that has access to all the information in the world? Or should we limit their power and control their actions? What implications does merging with artificial intelligence have for our identity and morality? Or should we preserve our human nature?
These are some of the questions raised by Origin, a novel that will not leave lovers of artificial intelligence and the future of our species indifferent.
Personally, I think that Origin is a very interesting novel, which raises two big existential questions: where do we come from? and where are we going?, and takes us on a journey full of mysteries, intrigue and action. The plot created is interesting and entertaining, which kept me hooked and expectant. The settings are very well described and set, especially the emblematic places of Spain, such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Sagrada Familia or the Royal Palace. The characters are varied and complex, each with their motivations and secrets. The rhythm is agile and dynamic, with constant twists and surprises.
However, I also believe that the novel has some negative or improvable aspects. For example, it seems to me that the author abuses clichés and formulas that he has already used in other novels in the Robert Langdon saga, such as persecutions, riddles, conspiracies, or final revelations. Some situations were not very credible or forced, such as the ease with which Langdon and Vidal access restricted places or solve puzzles. It also seemed to me that the author goes too far in scientific or historical explanations, which sometimes interrupt the flow of the narrative or are too technical or speculative. For the rest, I believe that the novel fulfills its objective of entertaining and making the reader reflect on transcendental issues, but that it also has some defects or limitations that detract from its originality and depth. It is a recommended work for fans of Dan Brown or the thriller genre, but it may not satisfy the most demanding or critical readers.
