Trappist Westvleteren 12 is a special beer that a group of monks in the monastery first produced enough for themselves and then opened for sale to the public.

History of Beer

Trappist westvleteren 12 is a trappist beer that has been voted the best beer in the world several times. the current sales volume has increased to a maximum of two cases, and the waiting time for a licence plate and telephone has increased to 60 days. the monks of sint-sixtus brewed this beer for themselves from 1838 onwards. later, when guests liked it, they put it on sale. after the second world war, they decided to have a brewery brew their beer. In 1946 they signed an agreement with sint bernardus for 50 years and put a polish trappist monk in charge of the brewery. the distance between the monastery and the brewery is 15 kilometres and this monk goes every day and takes his place at the head of production.

Sales

This is a beer produced by people who say "we are not brewers, we are priests and we brew beer to be priests". before the second world war they were selling to wholesalers, but afterwards they started to sell only to individuals because they were priests, not brewers. While it was previously allowed to buy 10 cases of 24 bottles, they reduced this to five and then to two due to the popularity of the beer over the years. trappist westvleteren 12, which takes about 2 months to buy, is sold for 52 euro.

Flavour

A sour dictionary writer who tasted trappist westvleteren 12 describes: "I've only had westvleteren blonde (5.8% alcohol) once before. while it was very good, I didn't find it outstanding; but this westvleteren 12, which is a dark beer, despite its high alcohol content (10.2%), is soft and smooth on the palate. it's easy to drink, but the consistency is just right and the alcohol makes itself noticeable but not unpleasant. The intensity of the malt ferments in the beer makes westvleteren 12 - to use a wine term - a "complex" beer. the intensity of the taste and the flavour give the impression that different grains are used in addition to the barley malt, which is a common feature in Belgian beers (wheat, oats, hops are usually the grains).
To summarise briefly; it is a magnificent beer that is already above the beer standards and far superior to other Belgian trappist beers on the market and especially to the king of beers, westmalle tripel. it deserves the definition of the best beer in the world to the fullest."
