In a friendly competition known as the "Jollof Derby," Nigeria and Ghana, two of Africa's most influential countries, are going head-to-head to determine who makes the tastiest Jollof rice.

Nigeria and Ghana, also known as the Super Eagles and Black Stars respectively, are gearing up for a fiery friendly match in Morocco this Friday. This clash, nicknamed the "Jollof Derby" due to playful bragging rights over the best Jollof rice recipe, promises to be more than just a friendly. The memory of Ghana's victory in the 2022 World Cup playoffs still stings for Nigerian fans, who see this friendly as a chance for revenge.

With the "Jollof Derby" heating up, both Nigeria and Ghana head into the match with some key differences compared to their last meeting. GOAL takes a closer look at these changes, particularly within the coaching teams, and analyzes which players will be on the pitch and who might be missing out on this highly anticipated friendly.

Historical battle

Nigeria hasn't beaten Ghana in a staggering 18 years! Since their 2006 victory at the Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana has either won or drawn all six encounters. Another win for Ghana on Friday would further solidify their dominance over their rivals.

This rivalry is so intense that a single match can have major consequences. Back in 2007, a heavy 4-1 defeat to Ghana in a friendly led to the firing of Nigeria's coach and their biggest ever drop in the FIFA rankings (from 9th to 20th!). The upcoming match goes beyond just football; it's a clash of national pride and a chance for Nigeria to settle a long-standing score.

Super Eagles post Afcon 2023

While manager Jose Peseiro initially faced doubts, he ultimately led the Super Eagles to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final.

However, his hesitation to rotate players led to fatigue and a disappointing performance in the final. After Peseiro left in February, the Nigerian Football Federation seemed unsure of their next move. They announced a search for a new coach but have placed Finidi George in charge for the upcoming friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

This lack of a permanent coach creates some uncertainty. The progress made under Peseiro might not translate under a new manager, leaving Nigeria's playing style and long-term direction unclear.

Addo steps in to rebuild Black Stars

In contrast to Nigeria's perceived indecision, Ghana is experiencing a rare sense of progress. Despite disappointment at Afcon in Ivory Coast, where they exited at the group stage, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has been proactive in restoring stability. Unlike Nigeria, whose technical leadership is uncertain, Ghana swiftly re-appointed Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars.

Addo previously guided Ghana to victory over the Super Eagles in the playoff to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. After serving as interim coach during that time, he stepped down immediately after the tournament in Qatar. Interestingly, Addo's return coincides with another match against Nigeria.

While Nigeria might be considered favorites after their strong Afcon performance, Ghana's stability under Addo presents a clear contrast to the uncertainties in the Nigerian camp.

Blow for Ghana as Kudud set to miss out

Ghana's midfielder, Mohammed Kudus, is out of the upcoming match against Nigeria due to a shoulder injury.

He was originally selected to play, but reports say he hurt his shoulder during a recent game for his club team, West Ham. Even though he finished the game, Kudus felt pain afterwards and doctors told him to stay in London to recover. This is a big blow for Ghana, as Kudus is a key player who has scored 11 goals this season!

Osihmen also misses out

Osimhen, the talented forward from Napoli and current Caf Footballer of the Year, is unavailable for selection for the Super Eagles due to inflammation of a scar from a previous injury.

In addition to Osimhen, George's team will also be without Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi and Empoli's Tyronne Ebuehi, both of whom have struggled with injuries throughout the season.

Players to watch

All attention will be on Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi as he returns to the spotlight. After enduring cyberbullying and abuse following the painful defeat to Ivory Coast in the Afcon 2023 final, Iwobi has made a remarkable comeback to the team, displaying top form and fitness. His outstanding performances for Fulham since returning from Ivory Coast to Craven Cottage have been widely recognized.

On the other hand, Iwobi's teammate, Ademola Lookman, emerged as a standout player for his nation at Afcon, scoring three goals and earning a place in the tournament's team of the tournament. He aims to maintain his exceptional form against the Black Stars.

Meanwhile, talented Leicester City forward Fatawu Issahaku, who had previously declined the opportunity to represent Ghana at Afcon, has rejoined the Black Stars. Issahaku has played a crucial role in Leicester's pursuit of an immediate return to the Premier League following their relegation last season.

With an impressive record of three goals and 10 assists this season for the Foxes, the 20-year-old now has the chance to showcase his talent and make a significant impact on the pitch, especially against fierce rivals Nigeria.
