For example, it uses drones equipped with thermal cameras to detect where mosquitoes congregate and release Wolbachia-bearing mosquitoes precisely and efficiently. It also uses machine learning algorithms to analyze data collected by drones and optimize release strategies.
Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence that enables computer systems to learn from data and improve their performance without the need for explicit programming. In the case of WMP drones, machine learning helps them adapt to dynamic situations, improve their efficiency, safety, optimize their processes and results in two ways:
✔ On the one hand, the WMP uses a movement planning algorithm called GLAS, which is based on machine learning to mimic a space mapping with only the basic positioning information. In this way, drones can coordinate with each other and avoid collisions in cluttered, mapless spaces.
✔ On the other hand, the WMP uses a swarm tracking operating system called Neural-Swarm, which also relies on machine learning to understand complex aerodynamic interactions in proximity flights. Thus, drones can adjust their trajectories and speeds according to environmental conditions.
However, it is worth asking ourselves: are there hidden interests? It is difficult to know for sure if there really are other economic interests on the part of Bill Gates to be developing the World Mosquito Program (WMP) project, since he has not publicly revealed his motivations. However, one can speculate on some possible reasons based on the available information:
✔ One reason could be that this businessman sees in the WMP an opportunity to invest in an emerging sector with great potential: biotechnology applied to public health. The WMP uses innovative and disruptive techniques to combat mosquito-borne diseases, such as infecting insects with beneficial bacteria or using drones and artificial intelligence to optimize mosquito release. These technologies could have other applications in the future, such as genetically modifying mosquitoes to prevent them from transmitting other diseases or creating new biologics derived from Wolbachia bacteria.
