Uremia is a particularly serious disease that is difficult to cure clinically. In most cases, life can only be maintained through kidney transplantation or dialysis.

However, because kidney transplantation costs more, more patients tend to use dialysis, and dialysis treatment is also divided into peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis.

Therefore, when faced with a choice, patient friends often don’t know which one is better? At the same time, I don’t know much about the difference between the two? This article tells patients the answer, so take a look!

Which is better, peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis?

From the perspective of clinical treatment, there is no obvious difference in the effects of dialysis between the two. Both are replacement treatments aimed at renal function problems, excrete waste toxins metabolized in the body, and help patients replace clean and healthy blood.

To put it simply, peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis are just different methods. As for which one to choose, the final decision depends on the patient's disease level and physical condition.

The difference between hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis:

1. Environmental differences

The environments of the two dialysis methods are different. First, hemodialysis requires patients to go to the hospital, because hemodialysis requires blood exchange in the dialysis room through professional instruments, so as to ensure that most toxins can be removed. Peritoneal dialysis is relatively simple, and patients can often perform it at home.

2. Security differences

There are also safety differences between peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis. If problems arise during the treatment of hemodialysis patients, they can be solved in a more timely manner. However, because peritoneal dialysis is mostly performed by patients at home, once danger arises, there are no professionals to help deal with it, so other accidents often occur.

Therefore, if you choose peritoneal dialysis, patients and friends should learn more relevant knowledge and understand the dialysis operation, so as to ensure life safety.

3. Different dialysis tools

The tools used for hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are also very different. The former basically completes treatment through a dialyzer, while peritoneal dialysis requires the patient to pour peritoneal dialysis fluid into the abdominal cavity and then retain it for a period of time. The liquid is released to achieve the effect of eliminating metabolic toxins.

4. Preparation before dialysis is different

If you choose hemodialysis, you first need to establish a vascular access. If the vascular access is blocked, the ventilation effect will be affected, and the patient will suffer more pain during the entire process.

In contrast, peritoneal dialysis only requires a minor surgery in advance to leave a peritoneal dialysis tube in place, but the disadvantage is that the patient needs long-term maintenance of the local wound and dialysis tube.

5. Different effects on the body

Although the ultimate goal of both is to replace the work of the kidneys, the need for puncture during hemodialysis often carries the risk of bleeding and may increase the patient's blood pressure.

In addition, if the dialysis equipment is not cleaned properly, there may also be problems with virus infection. The risk of bleeding in peritoneal dialysis is indeed smaller, but improper operation can easily cause local infection and induce peritonitis.

All in all, when patients suffer from uremia and want to maintain life, dialysis can indeed achieve relatively good results. However, there are two clinical dialysis methods, one is hemodialysis and the other is peritoneal dialysis.

From a medical point of view, the two have the same effect, but there are many differences in the process, such as the 5 mentioned above, so everyone should choose a more suitable dialysis method according to their own conditions.
