📌 Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum and etc, rely on decentralized, open-source technology known as blockchains; A blockchain undergoes a fork when there is a divergence in the protocol rules among nodes in the network, leading to a split in the chain. This can happen when the community or developers decide to alter the underlying code of the blockchain. When a fork occurs, it results in the creation of a new version of the blockchain, which may have different features or rules than the original one. This can lead to a new cryptocurrency or simply an updated version of the existing one. Forks are significant because they represent moments of change and evolution within a cryptocurrency's ecosystem.

There are generally 2 types of forks:

🖱️ Soft Fork:
A soft fork can be likened to a software update for a blockchain. When embraced by all participants, it establishes a new set of rules for a cryptocurrency. Soft forks are commonly employed to introduce enhancements or functionalities, usually at the coding level. Since they maintain compatibility with previous blocks, they don't split the blockchain, resulting in a seamless transition to the updated standards.

🖱️ Hard Fork:
A hard fork occurs when updates to the code are so extensive that they render the new version incompatible with previous blocks.
This results in a split in the blockchain, yielding 2 separate chains:
- The original one
- A new version adhering to the updated rules
Consequently, a new cryptocurrency is born, stemming from the original chain. Well-known examples include Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Gold, which emerged through hard forks from the original Bitcoin blockchain.
