A new milestone emerged in Bitcoin transactions as a user inadvertently paid a striking $3.1 million fee, setting a record surpassing the prior $500,000 mark.

This extravagant transaction took place during a routine transfer of 55.77 BTC, valuing around $2.1 million. Astonishingly, the user incurred an enormous fee of 83.65 BTC, equivalent to $3.1 million, marking an overpayment of a staggering 120,528 times the standard fee.

Bitcoin explorer Mempool disclosed this substantial error, highlighting the unprecedented nature of this incident.

What’s intriguing is the activity of the involved address. The user had conducted merely three Bitcoin transactions before this costly error. Additionally, the recipient’s address, initiated on October 16, appears relatively new in the ecosystem.

The mining pool AntPool managed the transaction, which was confirmed in block 818,087. As of now, AntPool has refrained from commenting or providing any statement regarding this occurrence.

This occurrence draws parallels to a previous $500,000 fee error in September, involving Paxos and F2Pool. Paxos, a crypto services provider, managed to recover the erroneously paid fee as F2Pool agreed to reimburse them.

The identity behind this recent colossal mistake remains shrouded in mystery. Whether AntPool will consider a similar reimbursement approach remains uncertain, leaving the resolution of this costly blunder open-ended.
