Honduras Imposes Strict Ban on Crypto Trading
By AZC News | 7 hours ago
The regulatory agency CNBS of Honduras has banned the financial system of this Central American nation from trading crypto and similar virtual assets.Honduras Imposes Strict Ban on Crypto Trading
According to a resolution issued by the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBS) on February 16th, Honduras will strictly prohibit organizations from trading crypto and virtual assets not issued or authorized by the central bank. The resolution will come into effect starting February 19th.

The reason cited by Honduras' regulatory authority for banning crypto transactions is related to the fact that many platforms operating in the country are not under state control, thus posing risks of engaging in fraudulent activities, money laundering, and terrorist financing.

Honduras currently does not regulate cryptocurrency assets. The central bank of Honduras also warns that they do not take responsibility and cannot guarantee any transactions related to crypto.

In March 2022, the Central American nation announced that they were exploring a legal framework for issuing their own cryptocurrency, which would be managed and recognized as legal tender. The status of this plan remains unclear to date.

Honduras Prospera, a resort town in the Caribbean, operating as an Autonomous Administrative, Financial, and Budgetary Economic Development Zone (ZEDE), recently recognized Bitcoin as legal tender at the beginning of 2024. It is unclear how the new resolution from CNBS will impact the special zone.
