Germany defeat a ‘warning’, but no more, says France’s Kylian Mbappe

France forward Kylian Mbappe insists they will not panic following their friendly defeat to Germany as they prepare to face Chile on Tuesday.

The World Cup finalists lost to Germany for a second time in the space of seven months as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat thanks to goals in each half from Florian Wirtz and Arsenal forward Kai Havertz.

Didier Deschamps’ side now face Chile at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille and will be hoping to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time since 2015.

Mbappe described the Germany result as “a warning” but said it was important not to read too much into it.

He told a press conference, as reported by L’Equipe: “If we had won 5-0, I would not have said to myself that we were going to win the Euros with our fingers in our noses. I’m not saying to myself that we’re going to be overwhelmed either.

“It’s a warning, but we’re not going to throw everything in the trash for a friendly match, even if there were a lot of lessons for the future.

“Now the match is over, we will have to show a reaction against Chile. We must look ahead and realise that what we have done is not enough.

“It remains a friendly match, but there were a lot of warnings, there were too many things that went wrong to beat a team like Germany.”

The Chile game sees France boss Deschamps return to Marseille, where he spent three years as manager before joining the national side.

He said: “I’m always happy to come back here. I spent eight years in Marseille (five as a player from 1989 to 1994, three as a coach from 2009 to 2012).”

Declan Rice reveals plans to help Ben White return to England squad

Declan Rice has admitted he is hoping Arsenal teammate Ben White returns to the England national team setup in the near future.

White was not named in the Three Lions' squad for their March internationals after Arsenal sporting director Edu phoned FA technical director John McDermott to inform him the defender did not want to be considered for selection. It was later reported White had fallen out with assistant manager Steve Holland.

At a press conference ahead of Tuesday's friendly with Belgium, Rice was asked about the ongoing dispute between White and the national team.

"Obviously, Ben, if you know him as a person and as a player like I do, he's such a good guy. He's such a good guy and he's an unbelievable footballer," Rice said.

"Gareth [Southgate] dealt with it this week, spoke about it. We've obviously not been going into the training grounds, so I haven't spoken to Ben on a one-to-one level about it.

"It's hard to know, really, what's going on. Ben made this decision. Obviously he doesn't want to play for England at this moment in time.

"Gareth has had a conversation with him about it and there's not much else I can really say to him.

"Playing for England is the greatest honour you could ever have. So hopefully, with the quality that he has and the quality he can bring to this side, we can get him back in."

White has been capped four times by England and was named in their squads for both Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, though it is at the latter where he is said to have disputed with Holland and sent home from the tournament.

Nottingham Forest have confirmed they are appealing the Premier League's decision to deduct them four points for breaches of Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR).

The Premier League announced last week they had docked four points from Forest's tally this season as punishment following a review from an independent commission.

Forest have now taken the step to appeal this verdict and released a statement on Monday outlining their intentions.

"Nottingham Forest can confirm that it has today lodged an appeal against the four point sanction imposed by the Commission in relation to the Club's breach of the Premier League's Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR). The club will not be making any further statement at this time," the statement read.

The Premier League released a statement of their own to recognise Forest's decision, commenting: "Nottingham Forest Football Club has appealed the decision of an independent Commission to impose a four-point deduction on the club, after its admission of a breach of the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

"The club lodged the appeal to the Chair of the Judicial Panel today, who will now appoint an Appeal Board to hear the case."

The Premier League have made 24 May the backstop date for appeals to be heard - five days after the 2023/24 season ends on 19 May.

Forest were plunged into the relegation zone when they were deducted four points last week, slipping beneath Luton Town in the standings. Nuno Espirito Santo's side are now one point behind the Hatters with eight rounds of fixtures remaining.

Everton, who have faced a six-point penalty this season for PSR breaches, are also set to face another commission over a second financial charge. They currently sit four points clear of Forest.
